I have been an artist and designer for years now and have loved animals since my family got our first dog when I was 5. Fast forward to 2018 when I discovered dry needle felting and how fiber can be sculpted to create dimensional pet & animal portraits.

I had to try it.

So, I mixed various colors of loose wool fibers together and roughly laid them out on a felt background. I then jabbed the loose fibers into one another and the background with a special barbed needle over and over until they tangled tightly together...and that's it. I saw how stable this process made the wool fibers, so I added more layers and dimension until I ended up with high relief sculpture, which eventually involved building an armature behind the large moose pictured here.
